What are some key events in the history of facilitation – past, present and future? What online resources are available on the development of facilitation over time?
Join facilitators worldwide in a six-month collaborative process to develop our collective story of facilitation, as the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. For more details of the background and process, see my earlier post Celebrating the development of facilitation – world-wide and history long.
Many events and resources have already been shared since the process was launched, including at the IAF North America conference April 9-12 in Orlando – you can view those below, and on Storify (or download a pdf as of 2 October).

I’m happy to share that the IAF’s New York City chapter will hold an event during International Facilitation Week in October 2014 in support of the IAF’s historical scan. It will look at facilitation in the present-day (where do we practice now… with who… why and how? ) as well as what can we envision in the future. We will post more details here as the event develops!

I first found out that facilitation is a profession just over a year ago, and since then, I have been amazed at the massive bank of knowledge it has created, the multitude of methods and the bounty boxes full of tools. From the activities in Europe and MENA in the past year, I have also seen how facilitation is spreading in many countries where it was unknown before, the new democracies, Middle east and Africa, where the first professional facilitators are pioneering the methods and skills in new contexts. I see this as a growing trend in the years to come.
But I see another trend alongside it. In the past 5 years I have been leading action research into the Future of Work with the participation of more than 80 global corporations around the world. Analysing the impact of technology, demography, globalisation and societal trends on the individual and companies, we came to the findings that collaboration across boundaries will be a must for the future fit. And you can not do collaboration without facilitation skills. And for this you don’t hire professional facilitators to come and do it for you. You need to develop these skills in your managers and leaders so that they have the capabilities to facilitate conversation physically and virtually, manage and facilitate conflict, create and facilitate collaboration, creativity and innovation.
